Why we don't connect to your bank
Most finance apps use third-party connectors to pull data from your bank. It sounds convenient, but there are real downsides worth understanding.
Your bank's fraud protection can be voided. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada warns that sharing your banking credentials with third-party apps may break your account agreement, and your bank may hold you responsible for unauthorized transactions.
Connections are frustrating and unreliable. Logins fail, accounts disconnect, and you're re-entering passwords constantly. The data often comes back with missing holdings, wrong balances, or delayed updates.
The costs get passed to you. Connectors charge monthly fees that other apps simply pass along in their pricing.
Greenline takes a different approach. Upload a brokerage statement, take a screenshot of your holdings, or enter your positions manually. You stay in control, and your bank protections stay intact.
What happens when you upload a statement
A brokerage statement has a lot on it. We only care about a small part of it.
What we keep
Ticker symbols, quantities, book values, and account type. Everything we store is encrypted.
What we throw away
Full account numbers, addresses, personal identifiers. Original documents are deleted once processing is complete.
